Barzan University College (BUC), in partnership with Swinburne University of Technology, recently provided students with a unique experiential learning opportunity through an educational visit to Fuwairit Beach during Qatar’s annual hawksbill sea turtle hatching season.
Organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the visit gave students the rare opportunity to witness endangered hawksbill sea turtle hatchlings emerge from their nests before participating in their safe release into the Arabian Gulf. Seeing the hatchlings begin their journey to the sea offered students an unforgettable insight into one of Qatar’s most remarkable natural events while allowing them to contribute to an important national conservation initiative.
Throughout the experience, students were guided by environmental specialists who introduced them to the life cycle of hawksbill sea turtles, the importance of protecting nesting habitats, and the conservation efforts being undertaken to safeguard one of the world’s critically endangered marine species. They also learned about the environmental challenges affecting marine ecosystems, including climate change, habitat loss, pollution, and the role individuals and organisations can play in protecting biodiversity.
The visit combined education with hands-on participation, giving students the chance to apply classroom learning in a real-world setting while deepening their understanding of sustainability and environmental responsibility. By taking part in the release of the hatchlings, students experienced first-hand how conservation programmes help preserve Qatar’s natural heritage for future generations.
Beyond the educational value, the day offered students an engaging and memorable outdoor experience where they connected with nature, explored one of Qatar’s unique environmental treasures, and shared a meaningful learning experience with their peers. The visit encouraged curiosity, teamwork, and a greater appreciation of the country’s rich biodiversity.
The initiative reflects Barzan University College’s commitment to experiential learning and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), providing students with opportunities that extend beyond the classroom and prepare them to become globally minded, socially responsible graduates. Through collaborations with national organisations, the College continues to create impactful learning experiences that support sustainability, environmental awareness, and the aspirations of Qatar National Vision 2030.
