BIO

Dr. Aws Hasak is a civil and structural engineering academic with extensive experience in higher education, research, and professional engineering practice. He currently serves as a Lecturer of Engineering at Barzan University College in Doha, Qatar, where he teaches undergraduate engineering courses, contributing to both theoretical instruction and applied learning. His teaching approach integrates rigorous theoretical foundations with laboratory-based and applied learning, with a strong emphasis on accreditation-aligned outcomes and student- centered instruction.

Dr. Hasak earned his PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of Ottawa (Canada) in 2025. His doctoral research focused on the performance of post-tensioned concrete-filled GFRP tubes for wind turbine towers in remote areas, addressing structural efficiency, durability, and constructability challenges in harsh and remote environments. He also holds a Master of Applied Science in Structural Engineering from the University of Ottawa, where his research examined the performance of FRP-strengthened concrete columns under simulated blast loading. In addition, he earned a Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering (Structural and Geotechnical) from the University of Ottawa, which provided a strong foundation in both structural and geotechnical engineering principles.

Prior to relocating to Qatar, Dr. Hasak was a Professor in the Department of Architecture, Construction, and Civil Engineering at Algonquin College in Ottawa, where he taught a broad range of fundamental civil engineering courses between 2019 and 2024. He actively contributed to curriculum development, assessment design, and academic mentoring, supporting applied engineering education and diverse student learning pathways.

Dr. Hasak has also held long-term appointments as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Ottawa, supporting both undergraduate and graduate courses in reinforced concrete design, structural steel design, theory of structures, bridge design, and rehabilitation of concrete structures. Additionally, he worked as a Visiting Research Assistant at the National Research Council Canada, where he conducted research on FRP retrofit systems for blast-resistant structures and performed detailed structural analyses using advanced numerical and experimental techniques.

Alongside his academic career, Dr. Hasak has professional industry experience as a Structural Engineer (EIT), contributing to the design and analysis of reinforced concrete structures, preparation of technical reports, and site coordination for engineering projects. His research and professional interests include FRP and GFRP structural systems, post-tensioned concrete structures, cyclic and extreme loading behavior, sustainable construction solutions for remote areas, and advanced experimental and numerical methods in structural engineering.

Dr. Hasak is the recipient of several competitive scholarships and awards, including the NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship, the University of Ottawa Scholarship, and the University of Ottawa Dean’s Award. He remains actively engaged in teaching, research, and academic service within the field of civil and structural engineering.
