Barzan University College (BUC) marked a defining moment in Qatar’s higher education landscape as it officially welcomed its inaugural cohort of students to the Orientation Program held at the newly completed BUC Auditorium in Doha.
The event brought together 100 students enrolled across Foundation, Undergraduate, and Postgraduate programs, representing the first-ever cohort under the academic partnership between BUC and Swinburne University of Technology, Australia — a collaboration that introduces Australian tertiary qualifications to Qatar for the very first time.
From the first greetings to the final applause, the day was filled with energy, optimism, and pride as students, faculty, and staff came together to celebrate the beginning of an academic journey built on innovation, global excellence, and employability. Students and faculty also had the opportunity to take photos with a falcon, symbolizing both Qatar’s national heritage and BUC’s new logo and mascot.
In his address, Dr. Hassan Al-Derham, CEO and Vice-Chairman of Barzan University College, commended the collective effort that brought the institution’s vision to life:
“This is not just the start of a new academic year; it is the start of a new chapter for higher education in Qatar. These students represent the future — a future built on innovation, collaboration, and a shared pursuit of excellence.”
Joining the celebration were senior leaders from both institutions, including Prof. Lotfi Belkhir, Dean of Barzan University College, and representatives from Swinburne University of Technology, Australia, who expressed their excitement for the partnership’s role in shaping global-ready graduates in Qatar.
The Program Introduction phase of the Orientation was led by Dr. Kawther Musthafa, Chief Academic Officer, who outlined BUC’s academic framework, support services, and learning pathways. This was followed by faculty-led sessions from the respective schools of Business, Computing, and Engineering, where professors guided students through course modules, structures, and academic expectations.
The atmosphere remained vibrant throughout the day as students participated in a series of icebreaker activities, including a lively “Barzan Bingo” session and other interactive games designed to help them connect, collaborate, and unwind in their new environment.
Reflecting on the milestone, Prof. Lotfi Belkhir, Dean of Academic Affairs, highlighted the significance of the day:
“What began as a vision less than a year ago is now a vibrant reality. The turnout and enthusiasm of our first cohort reaffirm that Qatar is ready for a future-focused, industry-linked model of education.”
The auditorium buzzed with excitement as students formed new friendships and connected with their academics. The program also featured inspiring guest segments, including Swinburne alumna Radhika Sharma, who shared highlights from her experience at the Hawthorn campus in Melbourne.
Industry professionals Omar Shehada from GHD and Ali Haider from Vodafone Qatar delivered engaging presentations centered on career development and employability, offering students valuable insights into Qatar’s evolving professional landscape. Radhika later returned to the stage to share her personal journey — from studying in Melbourne to pursuing a global career with Qatar Airways — leaving students inspired to chart their own international pathways.
The event concluded with an official group photograph featuring students, faculty, and staff — a powerful symbol of unity and achievement. Students were also presented with their official BUC student ID cards by Prof. Lotfi Belkhir and Dr. Golnoush, marking their formal induction into the BUC community.
Captured just 125 days after BUC’s official media launch, the moment reflected what vision, collaboration, and determination can accomplish in a remarkably short time. It was more than a photo; it was a statement — that the future of higher education in Qatar has arrived.
As classes commence, Barzan University College stands ready to redefine the higher education experience in Qatar — empowering students to Learn. Lead. Transform.
