In a gesture that highlights the growing educational and diplomatic ties between Australia and Qatar, Barzan University College (BUC) was honoured to host H.E. Shane Flanagan, Australian Ambassador to Qatar, and Ms. Azza Basha, Economic Diplomacy & Visit Officer, at the BUC Admissions Office.
The ambassadorial visit provided an opportunity to explore the collaborative efforts between Australia and Qatar in higher education, student mobility, and strategic workforce development. The delegation was warmly received by Dr. Hassan Al-Derham, Vice Chairman of BUC; Eng. Abdur Rahman, Chief Executive Officer of BUC; Ashfaq Ahamed, Head of Marketing and Admissions; and Wei Li Wong, Director of Strategic Engagement & Partnership Development.
During the visit, the Australian delegation was introduced to the core team behind BUC’s student recruitment and admissions efforts. They held meaningful conversations with the university’s admissions counselors—who play a vital role in guiding students through their higher education journey and ensuring access to Australian-quality academic opportunities within Qatar.
The ambassador’s engagement with the admissions team underscored the importance of frontline educational professionals in achieving national development goals and advancing the shared vision of both countries for a skilled, future-ready generation.
BUC’s partnership with Swinburne University of Technology, Australia, offers a unique pathway for Qatari and international students to earn globally recognised degrees while contributing to the nation’s knowledge economy—a mission strongly aligned with Qatar National Vision 2030.
As BUC prepares for its upcoming academic intake, the visit stands as a testament to the role of diplomacy, strategy, and shared values in shaping a global educational ecosystem that benefits students across borders.
